Lewis Baltz. Text by Bernard Lamrche-Vadel. Classiques du XXIe siècle. Éditions La Différence, Paris, 1993. 151 pp. Small squarish quarto. First edition. Clothbound in photo-illustrated dust jacket. Color and black-and-white reproductions. Biography and list of plates. Text in French.

Beautifully printed, this important retrospective accompanied the French showing of the exhibition "Rule Without Exception."

Baltz made his name in the late 60s as part of the New Topographics movement photographing forlorn, nondescript wastelands--produced by what we now call sprawl--whose 'natural' distinguishing features have been virtually obliterated. "Baltz's pictures are monolithic in the sense that they make southern California, where he grew up, literally two-dimensional and abstract. The unbroken surfaces that Baltz has depicted have--in the photograph--anyway--a kind of purity as pattern often quite beautiful."--Michel Frizot, The New History of Photography, p. 656.

Previous owner's name neatly written in pen on front flyleaf; otherwise Fine+/Fine.
