Time Exposed. Photographs by Hiroshi Sugimoto. Text and interview by Thomas Kellein. Edition Hansjörg Mayer, Stuttgart, 1995. 112 pp. Oblong quarto. First edition. Clothbound in illustrated dust jacket. 74 black-and-white reproductions printed by Staib+Mayer, Stuttgart.

In Sugimoto's mesmeric seascapes, "time is the primary leitmotif--not so much the effects of the long exposures used in making many of the images--but historical time," write Martin Parr and Gerry Badge in The Photobook, A History, vol. I. "Sugimoto was looking to record a scene that has remained more or less unchanged sine man first appeared on the planet, a primal scene." In addition to examples from his day and night seascapes, this catalogue, prepared for an 1995 exhibition in Basel, also includes work from the interior and drive-in theaters, diorama, and both Wax Museum series. Includes biography and selected bibliography.
