Narcotic Photographic Document. Photographs by Kazuo Kenmochi. Inoue Shoten. Tokyo., 1963. 157 pp. Quarto. First edition. Clothbound in photo-illustrated dust jacket. Card slipcase with printed label. Black-and-white reproductions.

A visceral look inside the drug culture of late 50's early 60's drug culture in Japan. While more detached in its view than Larry Clark's Tulsa, which it predates by many years, it is nonetheless shot in a startlingly intimate style. There are images of the production and distribution of contraband; addicts in varying states of dissolution; drug seizures shot in a manner not unlike Christian Boltanski or recent books such as Checked Baggage; and finally incarceration. The book is all the more impressive given that Japanese documentary practice at the time was dominated by a rather straight aesthetic that emphasized clear storytelling. An essential book for any serious Japanese photobook collection!!

Fine- in Fine- dust jacket and Near Fine slipcase; just a bit of scuffing to boards; jacket with a bit of wear at crown of spine; case with wear to labels and moderate tanning.
