A stunning, iconic composition that places the real and the illustrated figures in a perfect, symmetrical relationship: One dark, one light; one living, one represented; each gesturing with a hand; their eyes closed or covered. The two figures coexist in a tight, compressed space that is a product of the photo's framing devices. The real woman in Cordoba, Spain in 1933 makes Venus’s gesture hand at breast, half-hearted, but reminiscent of Botticelli’s Venus.

Some flecking upper left corner of image and above neckline of black dress--visible only in raking light; crease to lower right white border (2 in./5 cm.; image unaffected).
