Waiting, Sitting, Fishing and Some Automobiles. Photographs by Anthony Hernandez. Essay by Gerry Badger. Designed by John Gossage. Loosestrife Editions, Bethesda, MD, 2007. 264 pp. Large quarto (11 x 12 in./28 x 30.5 cm.) First edition. SIGNED on half-title page. Clothbound in photo-illustrated dust jacket. 42 duotone reproductions in gatefold.

This extraordinarily beautiful, elaborately designed monograph from Loosestrife Editions presents four previously (for the most part) unpublished bodies of work shot between 1979 and 1982 by noted Los Angeles photographer Anthony Hernandez. Heavily influenced by the 'New Topographics' aesthetic, these stark black and white urban typologies of Southern California were captured at particularly bleak moments in the recent past. In John Gossage's intelligent design, each plate a is large double-fold situated next to a map of the area where it was taken. The images reproduced are from for distinct bodies of work: "Public Transit Areas", Public Use Areas", "Public Fishing Areas", and "Automotive Landscapes", all of which were shown at the J. Paul Getty Museum in 2006.

Very Fine.
