Ed Ruscha: Nine Swimming Pools (and a Broken Glass). Ed Ruscha, Los Angeles, 1968. 64 pp. Duodecimo (7 1/8 x 5 1/2 in.). First edition, 1 of 2,400 copies (reprinted in 1976 in an edition of 2000 copies). Stiff printed wrappers. 10 four-color reproductions. Glassine jacket.

NOTE: Due to fragile nature of this book, interior shots below are taken from Sylvia Wolf, Ed Ruscha and Photography.

At a time when fine art photography was moving toward a distinctly subjective vision in documentary photography--Arbus, Friedlander, Winogrand--Ruscha was moving in the opposite direction, making pictures that were cool, distant, and entirely flat emotionally, lacking even a hint of personal style. Following Some Lon Angeles Apartments (1965), Every building on Sunset Strip (1966), and Thirtyfour Parking Lots in Los Angeles, Nine Swimming Pools (and a Broken Glass) continues with his depictions of iconic L.A. 'architectural memes' in a manner that suggests emptiness and desolation.--reference: Sylvia Wolf, Ed Ruscha and Photography

Fine and bright in a tanned glassine; tiny chips at upper edge .
