This Week's Auctions
Leading off our auction listings this week, one of the founding works of twentieth century photojournalism, Robert Capa's epochal 1938 publication, Death in the Making. The Spanish Civil War 'witnessed the birth of the modern war photographer, exemplified by Capa' (Parr & Badger). With its iconic dust jacket, this is a signal work of the Modernist, anti-fascist sensibility, totally of a piece with Woody Guthrie's famous missive, 'This Guitar Kills Fascists'. We couldn't resist pairing it here with 'Spanish Bombs', the equally iconic Clash tune from 'London Calling.' "The hillsides ring with 'Free the people'/Or can I hear the echo from the days of 'With trenches full of poets."
