Seventy Pictures on Paper 1815 to the Present.

Numerous contributing artists. Introduction by Matthew Marks and Jeffrey Fraenkel.
Fraenkel Gallery / Matthew Marks, 1996. Unpaged, numerous full color illustrations, 8x10".

Published jointly by the Matthew Marks Gallery and the Fraenkel Gallery, Open Secrets is the catalogue to their commendable exhibition of works on paper. They weave together 35 drawings and 35 photographs, by the masters of the last two centuries--including Diane Arbus, Joseph Cornell, Walker Evans, Adam Fuss, Louis Faurier, Piet Mondrian, Edweard Muybridge, Pablo Picasso, Gerhard Richter, and Hiroshi Sugimoto--creating a poigniant summation of the possibilities of expressing thought on paper. This brilliant and surprising catalogue is as ambitious as the Fraenkel Gallery's seminal Seeing Things, as thoughtfully chosen, and as finely wrought.
