Born Into Brothels.
Direceted by Ross Kaufman and Zana Briski.
Red LIght Films, New York, 2005.
New York-based photographer Zana Briski traveled to Calcutta in the mid-1990's and distributed cameras to some of the children living in the brothels to teach them photography. Their story, and the images they capture, form the basis of this devastating and profoundly uplifting documentary. The children's colorful, intimate compositions reveal their disparate personalities and offer a window into the kind of extraordinary lives they might live if they were allowed an escape from the bleak realities of their implacable circumstances. '...it will reorder the worldview of whoever sees it' (Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times). Academy Award winner for Best Documentary. In English and Bengali with English subtitles.
