Yami No Hana.
Araki’s Jewelry and Flower.
Photographs by Nobuyoshi Araki.
Artbeat Publishers, Tokyo, 2008. 80 pp., 41 color illustrations, 10½x13".
‘You put rouge on your lover’s lips’ said Araki in the course of making this series ‘I adorn dying flowers and jewelry in the same way’. While flowers have previously featured in Araki’s photographic projects, it is the use of some of the best jewelry in the world (at a reported value of some 1.3 billion Japanese yen) that adds an extra dimension to this lavish production. Flowers – tulips, roses and orchids - sometimes slowly starting to rot or with extra colour added to increase their vibrancy, are situated together with these priceless pieces of jewelry. Stunning full-page photographs are reproduced here one to a page, printed in sumptuous, rich colours on glossy paper and presented in a Japanese-red bound edition with an accompanying slip-case.
