Tuscany: Wandering the Back Roads, Volume II.
Photographs by Michael A. Smith.
Lodima Press, Revere, 2004. 128 pp., 59 black-and-white illustrations, 20x9½".
Tuscany, as all know, has been a source of inspiration to artists for centuries. For three years in a row, from 1999 to 2001, photographers Michael A. Smith and Paula Chamlee made a photographic pilgrimage to this gorgeous region of Italy. Their photographs include work from the quarries in the Carrara region to the north to the many old Etruscan villages in the south. What both of these photographers excel in is a sensitivity to composition and the complex arrangement of tonalities in black-and-white that good prints can yield. There is an evident pride in the exacting nature of large-format negatives and the sheer amount and richness of detail present in gelatin silver contact prints. All of that is fully present in these two exquisite volumes. The limited editions are signed, numbered, custom-bound, and slipcased, and come with your choice of any photograph in the book. All photographs are original gelatin silver contact prints made by the photographers, signed and numbered, mounted, and overmatted.
