Desert Cantos.
Photographs by Richard Misrach. Essay by Reyner Banham.
University of New Mexico Press, Albuquerque, 1987. 120 pp., 58 color plates, 9 color figures, map, 12x9".

Misrach re-examines the symbolism of the American desert in this powerful series of color photographs organized in "cantos" reflecting the four elements. "Misrach's photographs are spectacular landscape views, but they are more than that. He is concerned with the desert as a wild and primordial place and with the effects of the human presence on the desert. The conclusions offered are multi-faceted: human use and habitation of the desert have resulted in a great deal of destruction of a fragile environment, but at the same time the human intrusion seems small and ultimately of little consequence."--the publisher.
