Putting Myself in the Picture.
Text and photographs by Jo Spence.
Real Comet Press,
Seattle,
1988.
224 pp., numerous black-and-white illustrations,, 6½x9¼".
Jo Spence began photographing herself early in the 1950's and has continued to the present. Through the years she has developed a politically inspired viewpoint through the very personal content of her pictures. This autobiographical monograph is the result of that evolution. In it she redefines the family album while addressing the pervasive gender and class stereotyping in photography. Orginally published in England to a stirring critical acclaim, Putting Myself in the Picture is finally being published in the United States. Highly recommended!
