Dam.
Photographs by Toshio Shibata.
Nazraeli Press,
Portland,
2004.
38 pp., 19 duotone plates, 14x17".
Shibata’s large-format b&w photographs use an abstract
visual vocabulary to depict monumental engineering projects
and their natural surroundings. Concrete netting holds
mountain sides in place and immense dams, mostly located
in the American West and Japan,
repose on the landscape with a
regal quietude. Shibata's first monograph,
Landscape, sold out upon
publication and Dam promises to do
the same. It is limited to 500 signed
and numbered copies, each with an
original gelatin-silver print tipped
onto the cover. Printed and bound in
Japanese cloth at 14x17" inches, this is easily the most elegant
publication on Shibata's work ever produced.
