Nazraeli Press, Portland, 2011. 16 pp., 11 black & white illustrations, one original print, 5¾x7½".
Liz Steketee is a California-based photographer who utilizes her personal family photographs to reconstruct her family’s history, re-ordering events to fit preferred memories or desires. Unlikely combinations of family photographs are selected and scanned for montage; these disparate elements are then joined and printed as a single image. This resulting portrait conforms to her preferred personal memories or outcomes, allowing Steketee to face old confrontations, answer lingering questions, and resolve buried issues. Most importantly, this work allows the artist to rebuild her family history from her own vantage point.
