Structures of Utility.
Photographs by David Stark Wilson.
Heyday Books, Berkeley, 2003. 144 pp., 96 duotone illustrations, 11x11".
The two-lane highways and gravel roads of California's Great Central Valley and the Sierra foothills have been well-travelled by David Stark Wilson, a building designer by trade and avid mountaineer. At home in nature, Wilson found himself drawn to the buildings that support an agricultural way of life—grain elevators, barns, stamp mills, and sheds. These structures, built for use and necessity, often reflect simple yet elegant design concepts. Using a 4x5 inch camera, Wilson has portrayed the buildings and the landscape with clarity and understanding born of a deep love for both.
