In Ancient Marks, Rainier brings a long-term, obsessive project to fruition. The rituals and significance of tattoos and scarring is the subject of this major monograph, completed over a seven year period and made on all six inhabited continents. Over 100 photographs, beautifully reproduced in quadtone, explore this varied and very much alive phenomenon, ranging from tribal cultures around the world to the gangs of East LA. Rainier's background and work experience has melded seamlessly with his personal interests in this project. Extensively involved in tribal preservation, he is the director of a website which connects tribal cultures around the globe called Cultures on the Edge (cultures ontheedge.com), and his photography has been featured in nearly every leading publication, including National Geographic, Time, Life, Smithsonian, and The New York Times.
