Contrasting the austere wilderness of the fabled Orkney and Shetland islands of the North Sea with the verdant and welcoming northern reaches of the Scottish mainland, these panoramic plates by photographer David Marrus deliver both profound and humourous observations on life in these fabled climes. The elegant dimensions of the panoramic prints and the expansive tonal range provide a strong technical anchor for the book, while the images themselves reveal a sensitive eye coupled with strong compositional sense. With the clear, uncluttered design of the book itself, this is a strong debut.
David Marrus has long been an interested and perceptive observer and photographer of world-wide panoramas. This is the first of several volumes of his work and will be the only one solely devoted to a panoramic essay. Mr. Marrus seeks to provide truthful, essential images on a human scale - images one wishes to return to indefinitely.
