Photographs by Mike Slack.
The Ice Plant, Los Angeles, 2006. 80 pp., 41 color illustrations, 7x9".
A new series of 41 polaroids by Mike Slack. Beginning with what appears to be an asteroid and ending with what might be a stray dog. This installment links architecture, geology and space with recurring narrative elements to suggest a familiar but unspecified terrain. Available in an edition of 2000 copies.
'Both SCORPIO and OK OK OK reflect a long process of gathering pictures and a longer process of editing them into groups - gathering, editing, sequencing, as if solving (or creating) a puzzle. Over time, the details of color and composition start to form their own connections and the 'documentary' content - time, place, who, what - of the individual pictures is obscured by something both more abstract and more coherent than the world I originally encountered. There's a kind of Rubik's Cube satisfaction to shuffling these polaroids around all the time - the physcial and mental sensation of twisting and turning, mixing and remixing little squares until a pattern emerges.'
