Publisher's Description
In this selection of photographs, Jon Edwards integrates selected images from two portfolios, A Way of Being and A Life, to share telling moments in the libes of Bob and Helene Quinn and family on Eagle Island in Penobscot Bay, along with those of John Ryan, a jack-of-all-trades from Monmouth who currently harvests seaweed in East Harpswell, Maine. Through them, the photographer makes manifest the visual equivalents of his own beliefs about the merits of honest hard work gleaned from the earth, the nobility of holding fast to a self-reliant style of life in the face of incessant demands to keep up with constant change, and the rejection of pursuing material wealth as a chief purpose in life.

From the Introduction by Bruce Brown, Curator Emeritus, Center for Maine Contemporary Art

What separates Jon Edwards' work from other documentarians is that he focuses on very few specific places and people he deeply respects. Guided by his acute eye, generous heart and keen mind, he returns again and again to capture on film his appreciation and understanding of their circumstances. … Edwards adds an accomplished fresh voice creating lyrical histories to (the) mix.
