Intimate Portraits of Adolescent Sons.
Photographs by Martine Fougeron. Text by Lyle Rexer.
Peter Hay Halpert Fine Art, New York, 2008. 42 pp., 19 color illustrations, 9x9".
'We can trace a line from Julia Margaret Cameron to Fougeron, the pursuit of uncoerced intimacy. Fougeron's photographs of her two sons and their friends, however, have a more detailed density, a contemporary urgency that owes little to the snapshot,
although the pictures appear to be casual and the captured attitudes spontaneous...
What the photographer seeks, lovingly and agonizingly, is time, poised. For Fougeron,
these photographs will always be about the future, no matter when they are seen, or
by whom. This is art's gift of immortality, transcending memory, and a mother's gift of love.'
Excerpt from 'All in the Family,' essay by Lyle Rexer for the exhibition Tete-a-Tete.
Tete-a-Tete is a series of intimate portraits of the artist's two adolescent sons and their friends, taken in their home in New York City as well as in the South of France. Naturally observed, this on-going series brings the artist face-to-face with her teenage sons as well as the private world of adolescent boys.
Begun in the fall of 2005, the work explores adolescence as a liminal state, between childhood and adulthood, between the feminine and the masculine and between innocence and a burgeoning self-consciousness. The Tête-à-Tête series represents an ongoing look at the adolescent boys' heightened journey into self-discovery.
The exhibition Catalogue consists of 19 color photographs, covering a two-year period from 2005 to 2007, where one perceives subtly and yet vividly the metamorphosis of these striking adolescents.
