Shortly after 9/11, firemen and policemen photographed by Lyle Owerko began calling to ask for copies of his images. The terrible holocaust in the streets of Lower Manhattan that day crammed his camera with images of war and destruction, and Owerko wanted to somehow ennoble those pictures. He decided upon a book, something he could give to anyone who asked, as well as to libraries around the country. He did a limited-edition print-run of 2,000 copies, bound in somber black.
'And No Birds Sang was born out the grief and confusion of Sept. 11,' Owerko says. 'The purpose of making the book was to communicate the vision and feelings of one photographer's perspective to the greater whole of society.'
