The Transported of Kwandebele.
A South African Odyssey.

Photographs by David Goldblatt. Texts by Brenda Goldblatt, Phillip van Niekerk, and Alex Harris.
Aperture, New York, 1989. 84 pp., 26 b&w duotone plates,, 11x9½".

The structural cruelty of South Africa's apartheid system hides behind the hollow promises of tribal sovereignty and freedom of choice, and the truth is that many blacks live lives that are diminished and complicated by its bizarre ideology. Goldblatt's photographs of people from the Kwandebele homeland reveal the deception behind the South African government's policy of "self-determination," and offer a searing presentation of the deprivations of an oppressed people.
