Working in the iconic square format, Friedlander has put together a body of work surveying the immense diversity of buildings across America. Drawing from over 15 years of photographic work, Sticks & Stones is not merely an inventory of materials (which would have to include at the top of the list metal, concrete, and glass). One of his great gifts is the ability to make complex two dimensional arrangements out of three dimensional space. In this collection, any element of a building structure becomes raw material to his eyes. In one image, a group of road signs have as much visual weight as the skyscrapers they obscure, the grass field in the front of the image balancing out the sky peeking through the negative space. In another, an 80s Lincoln Continental secures the center while the chain link fence and nighttime shadows frame the scene. Hardbound and lushly printed, this is another exquisite Friedlander title.
