The First Picture Book.
Everyday Things for Babies.

Photographs by Edward Steichen. Preface by Mary Steichen Calderone. Afterword by John Updike.
Fotofolio-Whitney, New York, 1992. 67 pp., Numerous duotone full page bleeds, 7½x8½".
One of the first children's books to be illustrated with photographs, Steichen's The First Picture Book was originally published in 1930. Now back in print, this book contains some of Steichen's least-known, but most appealing images. The book was orignally commissioned by Mary Steichen Calderone, Steichen's daughter and a leader in the progressive school movement of the time, to help young children recognize and name objects. Reproduced in a small, clothbound edition, this book contains images that both adults and children will find timeless in their beauty.
