Photographs by Herman Leonard
Fotofolio, New York, 2003. 30 pp., 30 black-and-white illustrations, 4¾x6¾".
Herman Leonard's archive of jazz portraits documents the golden age of jazz, spanning the late forties to the early sixties. With his 4X5 Speed Graphic camera he captured the legends of jazz-Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis-at the height of their creative powers, as they performed in the clubs of New York and Paris. Setting Leonard's images apart from the work of his contemporaries, his command of cinematic lighting and atmosphere enabled him to capture the mood and ambience of the smoke-filled jazz club as setting for his eloquent portraits.
