Voices & Images From Bulgaria is a collection of photographs and musical sound recordings by Martin Koenig made between 1966 and 1979.
Armed with a letter of introduction from Margaret Mead, Koenig worked in villages throughout the different areas of Bulgaria filming, recording, and photographing the traditional music, dance, and ceremonies. These historic, black and white photographs memorialize a way of village life that has since been transformed by modernization and globalization.
Koenig's warm and active engagement with his subjects is ever present. He managed to enter into private moments as adroitly as he documented public performances. Subtle stories unfold in these photographs, many of which are addressed in the annotations accompanying the photographs reproduced in this book.
Hard cover with dust jacket includes a 53 minute CD of traditional Bulgarian songs and instrumental music. The book also features 10 archival photographs from the early 20th century.
