Onomasticon
A Vocabulary for Nowhere

Ian J. Whitmore
Sanguine Press / Ian J. Whitmore, Portland, OR, 2011. 125+ pp., 150+, 22x7½".

Publisher's Description

Inspired by a prevailing sense of non-place in contemporary American urban and suburban landscape, Onomasticon presents a new vocabulary for these ubiquitous, yet abstract spaces.

This series is comprised of 26 artist books that experiment with visual literacy and written language as it pertains to understanding and banality. Each book pairs a single word— representing a letter of the alphabet—with contextual imagery.

These 26 books are housed in a large cloth-covered book case with Onomasticon embossed across the top of the case.

Onomasticon is composed of words and images both obscure and familiar—helping to facilitate a dialogue about these liminal, non-places that surround us and the inadequate means by which we describe them.

This 26-Book series is currently in progress and is offered as a subscription. Books are delivered as they are completed—the project set to be finished in early 2013.

The price for this series will scale as the edition is sold and when the series is finished it will be sold as a complete set.
