The Arabian Monument.
Photographs by Oliver Hartung.
Green Box, 2012. 112 pp., color illustrations throughout, 9x12½".
Presenting a gorgeous and poetic collection of images taken by Oliver Hartung, this monograph serves to illustrate the photographer’s long-term project on the Middle East. While most of the photographs were taken in Arab countries, mainly Syria and Jordan, the book also includes locations in Turkey and Iran in order to define the region more broadly. The term ‘Arabian’ is therefore intended to reflect a romanticized, “Western European point of view that complements the equally one-sided, predominantly negative portrayal of the region in the media.” From desert roadsides to urban decay, the empty scenes steer the focus toward landscapes rather than people.
