Beauty is a mouldable concept, one that is constructed, retouched and imagined. The cult of the body – the desire not to age, to continue being attractive – shapes a society in which youth is exceedingly valued. Behind that wish to be young and beautiful, however, is a yearning to be loved, the overwhelming need to be desired. For this issue of ‘EXIT’, artists were sought whose images reveal different points of view and experiences, and who offer answers that are inevitably partial to the questions about what beauty is, and what we continue to seek beyond it. ‘Someday We’ll All be Cyborgs’ by Rosa Olivares is featured, plus texts by Joanne Finkelstein and Sander L. Gilman.
