No Mundo Maravilhoso Do Futebol.
Edited by Julian Germain, Murilo Godoy, and Patricia Azevedo.
120 pp., numerous color illustrations, 8x10¾".
This unconventional documentary of shanty town children--using pictures taken by the children themselves--organizes representation around the theme of soccer and community in a South American village. Avoiding the photojournalistic, empathetic styles commonly used to represent these people, Germain et al assemble loosely framed snapshots--alongside texts and paintings--to create a more personal, if less rigorously defined portrait.
