Photographs by Paul Kooiker. Text by Willem J. Mulder, Patrick van der Hijden, and Pam Emmerik.
Basalt, Amsterdam, English and Dut, 1999. In The Netherlands. 120 pp., numerous duotone and color illustrations, 9x11¾".
Utrecht Goitre combines dozens of medical oddities from the Utrecht University Museum with Paul Kooiker's photographs of strange, but common features like moles, cracked heels, and red hands. The contrast is both a relief from the distress of viewing the painfully disease-ridden and a calming, almost humorous commentary on the rarity of such conditions.
