Publisher's Description
As The Sign of Life unfolds, Seino Yoshiko's remarkable vision of contemporary Japanese landscapes is at once evident. In this original collection of her photographs, we see a multitude of contradictory elements which coexist in curious, uncharacteristic harmony... In Japan, the effects of industrialization and expansion are part of an accelerating trend begun in the late 19th century. The 'harmony' of Seino's photographs, then, is by no means a celebration in an innocent land: it is a harmony of a history of incongruities.
