EXIT #29 reflects on the representation of the spectacle of sex in photography from the nineteenth century to the present day.
In her editorial A Place without Limits, Rosa Olivares, editor and publisher of EXIT, considers the limits of pornography and the relationship which has traditionally been established between photography and voyeurism. Marina Wallace, professor at London's Saint Martin's School of Art and co-curator of the exhibition Seduced held recently at the Barbican Gallery, traces in her article Erotic Visions: The Exposed Body a path through the way in which the nude body has been represented and the strategies which contemporary artists have used to capture the voyeur's gaze. Andrés Barba, novelist and Anagrama Essay Prize winner, writes about the site of the pornographic event as one of transgression. The issue concludes with a text by Peter Lehman, director of the Center for Film, Media and Popular Culture at Arizona State University, on the role played by the spectator in defining pornography and the difference that exists in the way in which filmmakers and photographs have thought about their relation to it.
This number also includes interviews with three important photographers, Jeff Burton, Susan Meiselas and Larry Sultan, who have worked on different aspects of the theme to which this issue is dedicated, from striptease shows to the filming of pornographic movies. In addition to this there are portfolios of Stephen Barker, Hana Jakrlova, and Lisa Kereszi's work, with statements written by the photographers themselves, as well as images by some thirty more artists.
