Sports define our society, our identity, our passions, and, for better or worse, even our wardrobes. Whether cheering for their pro football team or playing ball in a local pickup game, nearly everyone has an attachment to some form of sport. Some are early-morning runners; others are weekend bowlers. Still others love surfing, but surf with their dogs. Sports allow people to express where they are from, what matters to them and how they have fun. Photographing that weird side of sports is what I live for. I want people to look at my images and laugh. Over the past five years, I have been traveling around the world seeking out the weird and wacky in sports. Thankfully, people’s imagination has no boundaries as they shape sports in their image. Whether it’s urban golf, cardboard tube fighting, Godzilla wrestling, lingerie football, Segway polo or drag queen softball, this body of work documents events you will not find in the sports section of the local newspaper. My hope is that people who see these photos will feel inspired by people’s passions and playfulness, by their audacity and authenticity. Most importantly, I hope people will leave with a smile on their face. (Sol Neelman)
