Birmingham, Istanbul, Zürich.
Photography by Linda Herzog.
Passenger Books, Berlin, 2006. 72 pp., 52 color illustrations., 10¼x8½".
Is One Big Europe a reality? Swiss photographer Herzog seems to think so: she snapped photos in three cities - her hometown Zürich, the once-industrial hub of Birmingham (United Kingdom) and Turkish metropolis of Istanbul - then chose 52 color pictures for this thought-provoking book. The result is an essay on urban life in the European Community today. Herzog's discerning eye finds more commonalities than differences; it takes detailed observation to figure out where each photo was taken. For one more trans-national touch, the book was designed in Zürich, typeset in Cologne, and printed in Istanbul. Awarded Most Beautiful Swiss Book 2005 and Selection German Photography Book Award 2005.
