Civil Dawn @ Giverny.
Photographs by Darren Almond.
80 pp., 40 color illustrations, 7¼x9".
Noted British artist and Turner Prize-nominee Darren Almond has developed an extraordinary practice of creating mesmerizing photographs captured under the light of the full moon. After his 2012 exhibition at the Villa Merkel and the resulting video Nocturne, Almond created this stunning artist book that showcases his moonlit Polaroid images of Claude Monet's iconic garden. 'Except for painting and gardening,' Monet once wrote to a friend, 'I'm useless.' In 1883, the Impressionist painter left his life in Paris for the idyllic natural splendor of Giverny, where he created his famous water lily pond and Japanese bridge. Those very flowers become the sculptural motifs for Almond's ethereal new work. To produce a more sculptural experience, each image is tipped-in to the page, along with a clear plastic cover wrapping constructed to hold a small picture of the famous lily pond.
