Photographs by Laura Gilpin. Edited and foreword by Martha A. Sandweiss.
University of New Mexico Press, Albuquerque, 1988. 160 pp., 31 duotones,, 8x10".
These letters of forty-five-year-old registered nurse Elizabeth W. Forster describe her job as field nurse for the New Mexican Association on Indian Affairs during the 1930s. Many of these were addressed to Laura Gilpin, and as a whole, provide a fascinating account of life in a small Navaho village. Accompanying the letters are Gilpin's unsentimental photographs of the Navahos.
