Mine Fields.
Photographs and design by Bill Burke.
Nexus Press,
Atlanta,
1995.
120 pp., 95 duotone black-and-white and many color illustrations, 8½x11".
Burke combines images and text in a powerful chronicle of personal experience. He has been travelling to Cambodia almost annually since 1982, and this book focuses on the region during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The images represent a wide range of subject matter, as Burke includes newspaper clippings, journal entries, movie stills and mine field warning signs. The book itself is uncommon in the present day, in that it was designed solely in the offset medium, without the aid of a computer.
