Photographs by Luc Delahaye.
Phaidon Press, London, 2000. 232 pp., 144 color illustrations, 5¼x7".
The fall of communism in the Soviet Union precipitated a descent into the near-anarchy created by a defunct social infrastructure. Delahaye has presented us with the faces and conditions of the individuals who live in the social and moral quagmire that is Russia today. Made mostly during his travels in winter, the season appropriately matches the subject: cold, dark landscapes are brightened only by the fires of passions and necessity. A powerful work of the first order.
