The Desert Seen.
Photographs by Lee Friedlander.
D.A.P., New York, 1996. 108 pp., 94 tritone illustrations, 11½x12".

Lee Friedlander's second landscape monograph continues the "non-urban" explorations he started with his acclaimed title Flowers and Trees. The eye for compressed, chaotic, and abstract space, which made his earliest self-portraits and street scenes so brilliant, here renders landscapes clearly his own, nuanced and energetic. Cacti, cottonwoods, and mountains are merged into a simultaneously flat and vastly open space, with Friedlander's familiar shadow occasionally making its appearance.
