The Last City.
Photographs by Pablo Ortiz Monasterio.
Twin Palms Publishers, Santa Fe, 1995. 104 pp., 80 sheet-fed gravure illustrations, 7x10".
Pablo Ortiz Monasterio provides a graphic chronicle of the distinct character of urban life in Mexico City. Plagued by pollution, overpopulation, poverty, crime, and other late-twentieth century ailments, Mexico City is hurtling toward destruction, with apparently no heed to the impending cataclysm. Monasterio's street photographs document the life of this colossal metropolis of twenty million inhabitants, revealing the disparate class structure and turmoil which, if left to itself, will shatter any hopes for the future.
