James and Other Apes.
Photographs by James Mollison. Text by Jane Goodall.
Chris Boot, London, 2004. 112 pp., 50 color illustrations, 11x14½".

With a moving introduction by famed scientist Jane Goodall, James and Other Apes presents close-up facial portraits of various gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans, and bonobos. What makes this body of photographs truly stirring are the brief biographies of each ape. Many of their parents were killed for the illegal bushmeat trade, and the anecdotes from their rescue and captivity are quite moving. These animals, with faces at once unique and highly expressive, were photographed in sanctuaries across Africa and Asia. The goal, clearly, is to educate and engender a desire to improve and enforce the various laws and ordinances that protect these magnificent creatures. Read Publisher's Description.
