Socotra: Island of Wonders.
Photographs by Josef Hoflehner.
Most Press, Wels, 2006. 72 pp., 32 varnished duotone plates, 13x14".
Socotra is located in the northwestern Indian Ocean, some 350km south of the Arabian peninsula, making the island one of the most isolated bits of land on earth. Josef Hoflehner has been photographing this island over the past months, and this wonderful monograph is the result of his exploration. The book highlights especially one of Socotra's most striking plants: the dragon's blood tree, which is a very strange-looking, umbrella-shaped tree. Its red sap was the dragon's blood of the ancients, sought after as a medicine and a dye. This is the very first photobook about Socotra and is superbly printed on heavy, uncoated art paper. This first printing is limited to 500 casebound copies worldwide.
