The autumn/winter issue of Photoworks magazine is published in October to coincide with the Brighton Photo Biennial 2010, curated by Martin Parr.
The issue considers the changing face of documentary photography and its relation to contemporary art, picking up on a one of Parr’s central themes. New work by Alec Soth and Rinko Kawauchi, specially commissioned by Photoworks, offer very different responses to the city of Brighton, whilst Billy Monk’s photographs reveal the subterranean world of nightclubs in 1960’s Cape Town. Andy Freeberg’s pictures of commercial galleries at various art fairs suggest the impact of the recession on the art market, and new work by Lisa Barnard appropriates pictures of Margaret Thatcher found in the old Conservative Party Headquarters.
A panel discussion with Martin Parr, Charlotte Cotton, Paul Reas, Sean O’Hagan, Gordon MacDonald and Ben Burbridge provides a critical context for this year’s biennial programme. Ian Leith explores the social and cultural landscape of Britain, as revealed through pictures of bins drawn from the Design Council Archive; and Jason Evans reflects on the politicized aspects of British photography in the 1990s, providing a further historical context for the new work showcased here.
Folio texts by David Chandler, Michael Godfrey, Sarah James, Ian Jeffrey and Julian Stallabrass, along with reviews of Stephen Gill’s book Coming Up For Air and Zürich Sommer 1980 by Olivia Huessler complete the new issue.
