Photographs by Peter Tillessen.
Kodoji Press, 2011. 20 pp., 18 color illustrations, 8¼x11¾".
Oil is the first publication in a series of artist books of the German photographer Peter Tillessen. The rainbow-coloured shimmering oil leaks seem artificially staged. Captured by the photographer during several strolls through the city, they point to a widespread daily phenomenon, which is known to every urban promeneur. Tillessen’s photographs reveal the immanent beauty as well as the fascinating colour palette and abstract formal language of the oil leaks. The photographer transforms a trivial appearance into an artistic associative image.
Composition and shape of the 20-page publication reflect the idea of the photographs. The Xerox-print images are arranged without binder and text in a free yet thoughtful manner; the round edges of the images mirror the shape and the flowing character of the photographed oil leaks.
