Robert Polidori's Metropolis.
A Photographer's Search for the Emblematic Image.

Photographs by Robert Polidori. Text by Martin C. Pedersen and Criswell Lapin.
Metropolis Books, New York, 2004. 128 pp., 60 color illustrations, 11½x10¾".

Many of us have experienced Polidori's meticulously seen architectural photographs in such publications as Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. He has also published subject specific volumes of his photographs, including the extremely popular Havana (Cat# PK674H) in 2001 and the lesser-known but equally powerful Zones of Exclusion (Cat# PK879H), a lushly printed volume of photographs made within the immediate vicinity of the contaminated cities of Chernobyl and Pripyat, Russia. Metropolis is a personal testament, drawn from his own archives of images made mostly while on assignment, to what has been called "the interrupted urban landscape." The work ranges from Las Vegas to Dubai, from Beirut to Rio de Janeiro. These are not the images the clients necessarily wanted, but rather those that Polidori made to satisfy his own engagement with structures and their social role, both physical and metaphorical. Each image is accompanied by first person accounts of what led to the image, based on interviews with Martin Pedersen, editor of the architectural magazine, Metropolis. Read Publisher's Description.
