In the past couple of years or so, an abiding interest in the
'anonymous' photograph seems to have settled over the photography community. Several collections of these passed-up-objects have been reviewed in the Booklist, most
notably the Thomas Walther collection published in the form
of Other Pictures by Twin Palms Publishers, and The Eye Club, offered up by Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco. There seem to be three main components that keep us riveted to these books-the physicality of the print object itself; the novelty of
bygone styles and commodities pictured; and the pure joy of seeing 'how things looked' through the eyes of our fellow citizens. Two more fine examples have crossed our desk recently, Snapshots , from the collection of the Austrian photography
scholar Christian Skrein, and Anonymous, a sampling of photographs from the collection of Robert Flynn Johnson, Curator at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco. Each is divided into sensible chapters, but regardless of how they're arranged, there is nothing that compares to a big bunch of cool snaps from yesteryear.
