Hidden Depths.
Photographs by Jacques Henri Lartigue.
Design For Life, London, 2004. Unpaged, numerous black-and-white illustrations, 6x6".

"I have never taken a photograph without one thought in my head: to amuse myself!"-Jacques Henri Lartigue. This sentiment is well known to students of the history of photography. Lartigue, with singular attention to the joys of leisure afforded him by his affluent upbringing, photographed all manner of sporting, racing, sailing, swimming, and simple lounging. Who knew, though, that many of his most famous photographs were originally made in stereo? Up until recently, very few -primarily only Lartigue and his immediate family-had ever seen these works in their original form. Design for Life, based in the UK, has just produced an ingenious modern stereopticon, accompanied by a set of Lartigue's best stereo photographs. Here, on the beaches of the Riviera and on the slopes of the Swiss Alps and in full 3D are Europe's rich, cavorting and enjoying themselves in all of their turn-of-the-century glory.
