Photo-Eye Booklist: 2004 Fall Booklist
The cover of our 2004 Fall issue features a detail of a photograph by Edward Weston. The photographic historian and Weston scholar Amy Conger offers a fantastic take on Weston and the new book, Edward Weston: Life Work. Also in this issue: Alan Rapp reviews new color photography by David Maisel and Todd Hido; David Scheinbaum and Janet Russek talk about their 30 year I Ching project; Alex Sweetman reviews the reissue of a Walker Evans classic, Many Are Called; and Mary Virginia Swanson along with our Editor Darius Himes continue their thoughts on how to publish a photography book. And as always, we survey the best new photography books available today.

Stanley Greene Wins Eugene Smith Award
Renowned photojournalist Stanley Greene was awarded the 2004 W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography. His most recent book, Open Wound, examined the devastating effects of the war in Chechnya. The images are riveting, painful, and replete with the cry for change.
In other photojournalism news, Nina Berman's book Purple Hearts, which puts a human face on the "casualties" of the war in Iraq, has been receiving much coverage in the press. The book "provides a glimpse into the myths of warfare as glorious spectacle through the minds of young men desperate to believe in the righteousness of their actions."—the publisher

"How quaint it now seems that only five years ago, the director John Waters could declare pornography the last cultural outlaw. Pornography was becoming hip, he was quoted as saying in The New York Times in March 1999, because it was "extreme behavior that's in on the joke...."—-Guy Trebay
